Stitching and Seed Stories Workshop | SALA 2021
Embroidery workshop and Seed Stories with exhibiting artist Amber Cronin and Keitha Thuy Young from Seed Apothecary.
In this workshop and artist talk, Amber Cronin will speak in conversation with Keitha Thuy Young about the development of her works in Hiraeth at Sauerbier House. Cronin’s visual arts research is rooted in performative and sculptural gestures that engage the audience through the connection of memory, time and space. Everyday actions such as weaving, sewing or sleeping are transformed into meditative sites of ritual activity.
Hiraeth (a welsh word) describes a longing or homesickness for a place you cannot return or one that never was. Seeds have been carried from home to home across generations of ancestors to provide food, sustenance and connection to places far away as people have moved across land and seas. Prominent in Cronin's embroidery work for the exhibition, this workshop will explore the intersection of sewing and seed stories through discussion and participation in this basic embroidery workshop. Each participant will embark on the beginnings of a small embroidery sampler while listening to seed stories from Keitha Thuy Young.
Saving seeds is a tradition that our ancestors have practiced for thousands of years, developing all the food crops that we know and use today. Over time this tradition has fallen out of practice as seed companies have taken on the distribution of seeds for profit, thus simply saving and sharing seeds is a highly radical and political act. Keitha Thuy Young from Seed Apothecary will share seed-stories and knowledge through this intimate embroidery workshop.
Included in the workshop: materials required to sew a small embroidery sampler (and some to take home with you), embroidery stitches hand out, seed stories hand out.
Cost $15.00 per participant.
